Be A Guest Performer

Out of the Woodwork (OOTW) Productions, producer of the Virginia Renaissance Faire (a historically based faire drawing its inspiration from Elizabethan England), is pleased to once again invite musical, vocal, and theatrical performers from the community and local schools to perform upon their stages. To maintain this historical integrity, we ask that artists who wish to perform on our stages present music, plays, literary works or other forms of entertainment such as puppetry, story telling, juggling, magic or dance from that time period wearing clothing appropriate to the period.

* Musicians- Instrumentalists will be featured on stage as soloists or ensembles. Contemporary acoustic or period instruments may be used. Sources of appropriate music include folk songs, recorder consorts or virginal music for woodwinds or strings as well as Tower Music for brass ensembles dated prior to 1600.

* Madrigals and Volcalists - Madrigal groups and other vocalists will be featured on stage as soloists or ensembles. Sources of appropriate music may include folk songs as well as secular and church music dated prior to 1600.

* Drama - Ensemble cast or individuals will be featured on stage and may perform a 15-20 minute selection from 16th century period works, a compressed version of a period play, period poems, an original performance piece in the style of the period, or a fairy tale (rewritten into the language and times of Elizabethan England).

* Dance - Ensemble cast or individuals may perform dance popular during Elizabethan England.

* The Queen's Jesters - Ensemble cast or individuals may perform other forms of entertainment such as puppetry, story telling, magic, or juggling popular during Elizabethan England.

School groups, soloists, and ensemble casts are eligible to perform at the Faire. Applications to be a performer must be submitted by February 1, 2010.

School groups accompanied by their directors will not be required to audition. Individuals, ensembles, or performance groups will need to make arrangements to audition prior to 1 March 2010. Auditions may be arranged via email at education@varf.org.

All groups will need at least one adult (at least 21 years old) to act as a liaison with OOTW to facilitate communications and ensure that your performance experience is an enjoyable one. If there is a group of individual performers that will be performing, a single adult may act as a liaison for the entire group.

The OOTW policy for all minors at the Virginia Renaissance Faire states that all performers or volunteers under the age of 16 years must have a parent or a designed responsible adult with medical authority on site at all times. Performers or volunteers between the ages of 16 and 18 must have a parental consent form signed.

Everyone performing at the Virginia Renaissance Faire will wear clothing approximating period garb. If you have your own Renaissance garb, you may wear it during your performance. Some medieval or colonial garb is close enough to be acceptable. If you do not have your own garb, you must provide either a long solid colored skirts (in a natural color) and a white peasant style blouse for women and solid colored slacks (not blue jeans) and a white shirt with a collar for men.
